The Role And Growth Of Love Spells Through History

By Brenda Collins

Love spells have existed for as long as people have valued romance. Like religion, they pervade every culture throughout history. In ancient days, the most popular spell made use of a wax reproduction of the object of the spell-maker's affection. They were generally cast to convince the gods to grant a love connection with the desired person.

Romance has been the most imperative aim of most kinds of witchcraft. It has been all pervasive, having a role in many eras and cultures. Initially, charms were cast to force the target to fulfill the desires of the caster. Offerings were often made to deities so that they would offer the caster more luck in his romantic life.

Druids were the magical Celtic leaders who made use of rites to predict the future, solve legal problems and heal the sick. Druids received authority that was almost equal to that of royalty. Contemporary druids focus their beliefs on nature. Charms are performed in oak groves, because they believe trees are sacred.

In druid magic, spellcasters are supposed to focus their intent properly so that an unintended target is not attracted. Magicians are encouraged to cast spells responsibly and have certainty about what they want. A wholesome intent is supposed to exist before charms are cast.

Druid magic makes use of frankincense, sandalwood, cinnamon and myrrh to gain the favor of a loved one. The ingredients are blended in the same room as the target, as the fragrance is believed to have magical properties that will merge the energies of two people. Alternatively, a wedding ring, wine class and red ribbon are arranged, and an incantation is recited every Friday for three weeks.

The ancient Egyptians believed that deities controlled romance. Charms were used to fix marriages, reunite partners or get rid of a competitive person. Rites were done with the help of daimons, the divine spirits that would appear in the dreams of the magician or her beloved. Incantations were spoken to encourage the help of deities. Items and ingredients that were owned by the beloved formed part of the charms.

Ancient Egyptian deities that played a role in romance included Apis, a bull that symbolized fertility. Min also controlled fertility. The cat god, Bastet, was believed to provide affection, and Hathor was the goddess of romance. Myrrh was believed to belong to Hathor, and thus played an important role in many romantic rituals.

In Ancient Greece and Rome, belief in deities formed the core of everyday life. Magic was used to invoke their assistance. Philosophy, medicine and religion were interwoven, so spells were performed in temples. Herbs that were seen to incite passion were offered in public areas.

Women of ancient times commonly used magic to increase the romantic bonds between a couple. Men focused their magical energies on erotic charms that made them seem more attractive to the objects of their affections. Prostitutes used erotic magic to increase their financial returns.

Eros was the Ancient Roman god of romance. Love spells used in this culture underwent a dramatic evolution when monogamy became a legal necessity in marriage. Charms of romance gained a darker reputation and were performed at midnight.
