Things To Realize When Searching For A Contractors License School

By Bertha Wells

California is a great state to live in. Even with the declining economy there are still many opportunities for licensed trades to do work there. However as the name implies you must be licensed. One of the best ways to prepare for this is to take a look at a contractors license school to start you on your way. Knowledge is power so these are the things you need to know when looking at them.

Not just anybody can test for a California contractors licenses. There are several requirements everybody must pass first. You must show you have 4 or more years experience for trade you want to test in. This experience should have been within the last 10 years. You may substitute 3 of your 4 years of experience for a trade school and college credit. You must send a letter to your state board certifying the job experience and college credits.

There are forty five different classes you can test in, including any specialty classifications. You may test for each of the 45 trades at any time. You could also hold different licenses for several different trades as long as you pass. You should be aware that the state requires you to renew the license every three years for each trade as well as requiring bonding for each one.

The class B or a general building license is the most common one. This is commonly known as the general contractors license. A general contractor can hire and also contract with other trades for work, as a rule though they do not do the work themselves. They are considered the overseers that manage all the other trades ensuring everything goes along smoothly.

Some of the common specialty type trades are electrical C-10 or plumbing C-36. By state law these people are the only ones that can perform these types of labor. They could on bringing older buildings up to state code or on new building construction. They are by state law the only trades people that can contract for this kind of work.

When you apply for an exam, you are generally given a 4 to 6 week notice for when you will be taking the test. This generally gives you plenty of time to get ready for the test. The test generally consists of two parts, the law test and the trade test. You can take each test up to 3 times before reapplying.

Both tests are basic multiple choice tests with four answers given and only 1 being correct. You can not take any outside items into the testing rooms with you. All these tests are on new computers which helps simplify things. The law test will have roughly 115 questions and most trade tests roughly 100 to 120 questions.

A good contractors license school will generally offer some kind of guarantee for their students. Most real good schools will even pay the 60 dollar re-exam fee for those people that fail to pass it the first time. The bottom line is if you are serious about pursuing this line of work, anything that helps you pass the test for your new line of work is a very good idea.
