By Carla Rossouw

Personal development is very subjective, but each individual can arm themselves with the most information available. One of the best ways to develop yourself as a person is to learn lots of new skills and knowledge, and then use and apply your new skills and knowledge as often as possible.

Compliment other people. Fighting this trend and complimenting others changes your mindset and makes you a kinder person.

Mistakes cannot be avoided, this includes going off of your diet. Just like eating too much cake can negativity affect your health, stress can also have severe detrimental affects on your body's health. Therefore, it is important not to let insignificant things stress you out.

Keep notes on your progress (or backsliding) in order to stick to an organized plan. Try a system that allows you to break each goal down into very small components. You will have an easier time achieving each individual component than you would achieving the goal as a whole. There are several ways to track your personal development goals, be it through a daily journal or with the aid of a planner.

Try to determine what things matter most in your life and devote your attention to them. By concentrating your emotional energy on the positive aspects of everyday life and shutting out the negative, you will be on the road to inner peace.

Once you have made the decision to improve or make changes in your life, commit to doing it. You will never create the life you desire by simply fantasizing about it. You need to step up and pursue your goals to make them really happen.

There's an idea of the "Law of Threes," which means that anything, good or bad, that you do to other people will return to you threefold. You should only be positive in your wishes for others. Focus on the positive energy within you and keep the negative feelings from pulling you into an undesirable place.

Life should be approached with wisdom and modesty. There are certain things in your life that you just can't change. Use wisdom to learn from the past and do better in your future.

Use your time efficiently so you can get more done in a shorter amount of time. One thing that you should do is to take frequent breaks from your tasks. Although this may not seem to make sense, frequent breaks can give you time to relax and get re-energized, so that you will be more focused when you return to your work.

Always be ready to capture your good ideas when they occur, wherever you may be. Keep a small notepad and pen with you at all times. Make detailed notes, and later, when you have the chance and are feeling creative, take your ideas further.

Evaluate yourself and seek out that one aspect that you wish to change or improve. If you focus all your efforts on that one thing, then the change will come faster and easier. It is also more likely that the change you make will stay with you in the long term if you narrow your focus to one single habit.

Get to know what habits successful people have, and then incorporate them in your lifestyle. Transform your lifestyle one small step at a time by selecting just a couple of things to work on at once. It takes about 3 weeks to solidify any type of habit, so push through that first month.

Not only will you find information on being successful, but you will also learn about mistakes that others have already made and be able to avoid them. If you truly take in the information you learn from others, you will find yourself taking the steps they had towards true success.

When you are trying to improve yourself, you should aim to have a high amount of self-discipline. You need to be able to control your body's urges.
