Cryo Services-How Does It Work?

By Luisa Sharpe

Disease, abnormal or damaged body tissue can all be treated using various methods that are available today. Cryo services in one method that can be applied in these situations. In order to get rid of pain and inflammation, get rid of diseased areas and the reduction of metabolism, extremely low temperatures are used.

Cryosurgery is described as a procedure that is applied in order to cause the destruction of abnormal cells which are found on the cervix. If not removed, these cells may result in cancer of the cervix. The procedure is often recommended by a medical professional depending on the severity of the condition, based on the biopsy results from tiny sections of the cervix.

The cryosurgery procedure involves the insertion of a specialized instrument into the vaginal canal and is firmly placed against the cervix. Once the instrument completely covers the cervix with the abnormal cells, liquid nitrogen is let out to flow through the instrument at a temperature of -50 degrees Celsius.

The abnormal cervical cells are destroyed by the low temperatures and they begin to slowly slough off until around two to three weeks after the procedure. The cervix is usually frozen during the procedure, and takes about three minutes. After the freezing it is left to get thawed and for three more minute, it is frozen again.

You may feel some cramps during the start of the procedure. This is brought about by the direct exposure of the cervix to cold temperature. A compared to the normal menstrual cramps, the pain might get worse a time goes by. However, several hours after the procedure, the cramps will steadily wear off. The cramping is minimized as the end of the procedure nears.

The body system should be left to relax for the rest of the day after cryosurgery is performed. After at least 24 hours from the surgery, regular activities can be resumed as usual. Some women may experience an increase in the amount of vaginal discharge. To avoid any more side effects, no item should be inserted into the vagina until two to three weeks have elapsed.

The insertions of tampons, sexual intercourse as well as douching are all activities that should be avoided during the two to three week recovery period. Cryosurgery can be considered as a fairly effective procedure that helps in killing and getting rid of the abnormal cervical tissue that is affected by disease especially when they are in the lower region of the cervix. In at least 85% of the cases in which cryosurgery is applied to get rid of the cells, the outcome is successful.

As like any other procedure, cryosurgery has its own risks that are associated to it. However, these risks are very minimal and should be made clear to the patient before and after the procedure. Some of the signs and symptoms that should be taken seriously may include pain, fever, foul odor, yellowish discharge and vaginal bleeding which is not in any way linked to menstrual flow. The doctor should be contacted immediately such signs are noted.
