Stop Snoring Causes And Remedies

By James S. Webster

When you breathe, the inhaled air passes through the air passages before it reaches the lungs. Before it reaches the lungs, it goes over the soft palate which is the tissue at the back of the tongue and roof of the mouth and over the uvula. When you are awake the muscles are toned and tight ensuring that the soft palate and tissue do not fall back into the throat but when you are asleep, your muscles relax. The soft palate vibrates when you inhale and exhale, leading to the distinctive sound that is better termed as snoring.

Though there are variety of non-invasive anti snoring solutions that are available, surgery is the last resort. Usually surgery as an option is only considered when all other treatment methods have failed to treat snoring. Surgery is used done to remove the excess tissue from the palate or to widen the throat for better breathing. It is an option when an individual has enlarged tonsils and adenoids. This type of surgery is known as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.

If you have suddenly started snoring or have been snoring for a while, it is time to look for a remedy that can finally put a stop to the snoring for good. Not classified as sleep disorder, snoring is still put under sleep disorders as it is one of the leading causes of sleep apnea. Obstructive Sleep apnea is diagnosed when there is a pause in breathing that is about 10 seconds to longer when asleep. The main causes of snoring include: Obesity,Respiratory diseases,Smoking,Side effect of prescription medicine,Allergic reactions,Consumption of dairy products,Tongue falling back into the throat,Alcohol consumption in the evening.

In many cases, when snoring is due to an abnormal growth or a change in the position of the bones within the nasal structure is needed, a series of surgeries might be needed to breathe normally. It will also allow better sleep and reduced or no snores at night.

Apart from these reasons that make surgery the only option to stop snoring, there are a variety of minimum invasive and laser surgery options that are available. Radio Frequency Palatoplasty is one of the methods that use electric currents to stiffen and shrink the soft tissue, reducing the vibrations and the snoring consequently. For nasal deformities, the procedure, nasal septoplasty is done to straighten out the tissue and bone, clearing air passage through the separated dual nose cavities.

But remember that surgery should not be your first option as there are a variety of non-invasive options available to stop snoring. However, if you are able to sort through the 200 and more stop snoring solutions, it is better to stay with the tried and tested nasal drops that ensure that the loose tissue is tightened to breathe free and easy all through the night. Some of the other remedies to end snores include chin straps, mandibular devices, mouth guards, nasal strips and many more that are easily available at over the counter drug stores. But if you feel that there is heavy snoring with pauses in regular breathing, it is best to consult a physician who may refer you to a sleep specialist for further diagnostic tests and examinations.
