For The Novice And Experienced Horseback Riding Long Island Is Enjoyable

By Cornelia White

Going horseback riding long island takes you along beautiful trails. They wind past fields and forested areas. Fresh air and sunshine contribute to the enjoyable trail experience.

Amateur and old hand alike enjoy lessons. Whether you ride Western or English, it is always good to build on your present horsemanship skills. The Western saddle is large compared to the English. The bridles differ also. English uses two sets of reins and Western only one.

The English rider holds two reins in each hand to guide his horse. The western rider holds both reins in the left hand. A horse is always mounted from the left side.

A stable equipped with an indoor arena can offer lessons year around. Summer day camps are available where a child can learn to groom, bridle, saddle and ride the same horse every day for one or two weeks. Lessons are given and everyone goes on exciting trail rides.

Everyone wears a helmet and spends time in a fenced arena before going out on the trails. No one learns to be afraid of the horses. However, no one is allowed to be a daredevil, galloping ahead on his horse without permission.

Older riders with a romantic interest in each other can find a place that offers rides along on the beach. The smell of salt water and the panoramic views of the ocean add to the enjoyment. How thrilling to canter through the sand or watch the sun set from the back of a magnificent horse.

After the sun sets equestrian activity can be continued in a well-lit indoor arena. A well-equipped one will have openings to allow the air to circulate and a sand floor for stable footing for the horses. Dust is kept to a minimum using a mix of sand and fiber.

A riding academy may have a seating area to allow families to watch as children are schooled in horsemanship skills. Some maintain bleachers near the outdoor ring as well. People can chat as they watch the riding and perhaps have a drink on a hot day.

Refreshments may be available for sale on the grounds. There may be a tack shop where clothing, tack and grooming supplies are sold to those who own their horses. All these amenities enrich the riding experience and the time spent before and after lessons.

Some group trail rides take you through Bethpage State Park. A prominent US Golf Tournament is held in these breathtaking surroundings located in the 1,476 acre park. You may see hawks flying overhead and butterflies fluttering along next to the trail as you enjoy your equine companion and the friends who ride with you.

Riding is not a one-time adventure. There are countless trails to follow. Horses provide a glimpse of what it was like for old time cowboys as they herded cattle in the west.

A few breeds can be trained to perform the intricate steps of dressage, a kind of equine ballet. This follows years of practice as horse and rider learn this performance art. The horseback riding long island is a fine introduction to the wonderful world of horses.
