General Information About Turks And Caicos Conch

By Vicki Diaz

The turks and caicos conch is a sea creature found on the islands from which it is named. Although technically considered an endangered species, many companies are beginning to farm these amazing mollusks. Although these have been a staple in the diet of this particular area, over fishing has helped to place this creature on the endangered species list.

Although still not able to keep up with current demand, many have seen to begin farming this creature with demands projected to be met in 2014. These farmed versions will be available as a food source as well as the shell for use. These have helped to lessen the impact of the commercial fishing of this creature with future hopes to eliminate the need for the wild fishing of this creature.

It is possible for one to import the shell from this creature even though all importing and exporting is strictly regulated and in some cases, not possible. This task however can be accomplished if one is importing some of those that have been farmed. It is common for the shell to be used in jewelry as well as a decoration and has helped to increase the demand for this creature.

Although depending on the area in which one is at, it is common for one to refer to this creature as a Queen Conch. Although they can grow to be quite large, they do start out quite small. It is known that they have a long life span with some able to reach age 40 or more. It is considered to be a slug like creature however its shell is colorful and spiraled.

Many who choose to research this particular animal can also find a great deal of information available through a variety of sources. This can be research on the conservation or preservation of this particular creature or other marine life as well as the organizations and companies that help with demand through commercial farming. Much of this is available in a variety of different sources and websites.

Those from the area have used this particular mollusk for many different purposes throughout the generations. Some of the common uses were for jewelry, decoration, ceremonies, tools, and building material. Many also consider this to be a staple of the diet as it is rich in protein and is consumed by the majority of the natives.

The islands that this mollusk call home are a band of islands not more than 75 minutes from the US border. This chain of islands is off the coast of the Bahamas and home to many different organizations. These organizations help with sea turtle rescue, helping several endangered species of fish, and helping to save the mollusks that are native to the area.

The turks and caicos conch can open the door to many different topics. These can include farming, sales, uses, and the importation or exportation of the creature. More educationally based information is available from many different sources. Much of the information that is available will also branch into other areas of interest such as marine life preservation facilities and research.
