Clown Accessories To Complete The Look

By Antoinette Quinn

Dressing up in costumes for holidays, parties or professional purposes can be a great source of amusement for both the wearer and observers. Though the selections are vast, one tried and true favorite has always been those brightly adorned jesters of the circus ring. Adding the classic clown accessories to the outfit help create entertaining characters that bring the fun to any party.

A great costume starts with a great base outfit and a creative make up job, but it is truly the accessories that can put it over the top. Easily found at most costume, party or Halloween specialty shops, the add-ons can be the finishing touch to giving the character some real personality. Building the perfect look is simply a matter of selecting the pieces that best express the desired impression.

Start building the look by deciding what the character's face is going to look like because that is where the first impression of personality comes from. Knowing the type of expression one wants to convey will help in selecting the colors needed to paint the face. Embellishments like rubber noses, colorful, shimmering extended lashes or ridiculous glasses help evoke the giggles from onlookers.

The next step is finding a hair piece that is going to exemplify the type of personality of the character. There are a lot of wig choices like bald caps, afros, pigtails, mullets and beehives. The majority of these are exaggerated and vibrantly dyed in all hues of the rainbow spectrum, some even including metallic highlights for a shimmering effect.

The big impact often comes from the outfit that one chooses to wear. Clowns sport a variety of apparel styles ranging from the classic blobby jumpsuit to the colorful over sized pants with blowsy tops and on to overalls or vibrant vests with many pockets. Suspenders, bow ties and neckties in bright bold hues and prints are real attention grabbers and just funny ways to take the ensemble to an even more amusing level.

Bring the overall effect together by putting the finishing touch on the head and feet. Donning a ragged top hat with a big flower on it, a patched derby or perhaps a teeny little straw bonnet can add a whimsical touch to the outfit. And everyone knows that any respectable clown is going to have to have a pair of large, brightly colored floppy shoes to make his walk a waddle.

A clown just is not the same without at least one entertainment piece. Gag items like balloons for making animals, rubber chickens, boutonnieres that squirt sniffers and magically appearing flowers are all standard tools of the genre. Some may even enjoy using fart whistles and honking horns as part of their performance to give zing to their jokes or tricks.

Putting together a great costume that is sure to be a crowd pleaser is to find the right clown accessories. Every little part of the outfit from the hair to the make up, clothing and toys can bring the look together and make it more effective. All of these items are readily available in specialty shops or on any number of online sites year round.
