How To Solve Common Drainage Problems

By Michelle Howe

Problems with the drainage systems may cause significant damages to your houses and properties. Therefore, any Walnut Creek drainage problems must be resolved in a timely manner before it gets worse. Nip the problem in the bud by properly identifying every part of the system. This helps you distinguish the issues as soon as it arises. It is prudent to create a map that points out the system features and surfaces in the property in details.

You may also set up structures to help divert the water flow away from your home. Converged waters may bring about risks of damages. By installing the structures, you are reducing the chances of water diverging on a single area. You can choose one or more of the structures that follow.

Foundation drains can help divert water away from the building's foundation. The foundation drainpipes have perforations to let water out. Thereby, discharging the water in various areas rather than a concentrated section. These are usually surrounded by gravels to filter larger deposits. A layer of fabric can also be used to filter sediments and avoid clogging.

Using the same principle, the roof drainpipe is designed to divert away water. This time, it aims to protect the roof from excessive water damage. However, it is not perforated, unlike the foundation drains. Moreover, this is connected directly to a dry well, the city's drain system or to a water body. The storm drainpipes are another variant. These can be made from various materials, like aluminum, concrete or polyvinyl chloride.

Meanwhile, the gutters are installed to collect the runoff from the roofs. Stacked up rainwater poses risks of water damage to walls, windows and the roofs. To allow constant passages of water, a downspout is normally used. Unfortunately, the pipes may be blocked by large debris. It is the purpose of the gutters to keep the water system free of fallen leaves and other debris.

Another effective means of preventing blockage is the catch basin. These devices capture the sediments that may clog the drainpipes. After the larger scraps have been filtered out, cleaning becomes much easier. Brooms and rakes are often used to remove dry leaves and other trash caught in the basin's grate.

Like the catch basins, yard inlets are connected to the piping system as well. It has similar functions, too. The only difference is that it is much smaller in size and is installed right away. There are plastic and metal yard inlet available in local hardware stores. Professionals can install the devices but you can also install them, yourself.

Remember to install cleanouts in many strategic locations. This provides easy access whenever you are cleaning the drainage systems. Cleanouts are access points that are typically installed in bends and curves where scrapes are expected to clog the system. This makes it easier to reach every point where the water flow could have been interrupted.

Finally, sump pumps protect your household from water damage. When the Walnut Creek drainage fails, water may be accumulated on the lowest part of the property. Before it damages even more of your possessions, the water must be pumped out and into the open. Sump pumps are normally used as a backup system only since it requires electricity to function.
