The term "sound machines" is a general term that refers to a class of appliances that include white noise machines, sleep machines, noise makers and white sound generators among many other permutations of these words. These devices are usually employed to block out or mask annoying sounds in our environment such as that created by neighbors arguing or playing their TV at too high a volume or just the general bustle of activity in a city that can create distracting noises. This noise in your environment can sometimes be blocked out by using a sound machine to overwhelm the offending noise with a more pleasant white noise sound of your own choosing. The white noise sound generated these machines usually consists of all sound frequencies occurring at the same time. This white noise will sound kind of like wind, rain, ocean or a mechanical sound like that produced by a motor or fan. The effect of this jumble of sound waves is that some sound waves get canceled and others get obscured, making the offending sound indistinct and therefore less obtrusive.

Avoid doing stimulating things just before bedtime. If you have been then relax, meditate, deep breathe or pray for around 10 minutes before getting into bed.If you are not asleep within 15 minutes don't lie there tossing and turning - get up and do some light exercise, walk or meditate - then go back to bed.Listen to soothing sleep sounds. Natural sleep sounds - like rain on the roof, breaking waves, running streams or forest sounds - playing quietly in the background allow the mind to switch off and not think about your problems from the day nor concentrate on how to get to sleep. Natural sleep sounds are better than playing your favourite music songs because the natural sounds are random and you are not tempted to sing along with them in your head.

Think about the last time you slept in a hotel with heavy, lined curtains--and you didn't even realize morning had arrived. Most of us don't have curtains like that in our homes--but they really do help create the perfect "sleep oasis." Look around online for blackout curtains for your bedroom--or consult with an interior decorator for information on good brands at reasonable prices.Buy a few CD Recordings: There are many sleep-inducing CD's on the market. They generally fall into two categories: recordings that offer guided relaxation techniques and those that simply offer relaxing instrumental or nature sounds. And whatever sound machines for sleeping you prefer, you should make sure to shop around. The products on the market right now run the gamut--from little alarm clock sound machines to full-featured "sound conditioners" with add-on sound cards to fit any preference or mood. Why am I so interested in sound therapy, you may wonder? Well, I've walked that insomniac road, I've popped those pills, I've drunk that "Sleepytime Tea," and I've beaten those pillows. The pills made me dependent, the tea made me pee, and the beaten pillows just made me a slightly more fatigued insomniac. What finally helped me learn to fall asleep naturally and happily again was my beloved and trusty little sound machine.
