The total number of employed people also fell by around 9,000 in August. These numbers, coupled with a drop of nearly 6,000 in the total Oregon workforce led to the 0.2% rise in the unemployment rate in August 2012. In comparison to the us average, Oregon's unemployment rate is currently a significant 0.8% higher that the U.S average in August of 8.1%. Additionally, while Oregon's rate has been on the rise, the national average has largely trended downward.

Compared to August 2011 when the unemployment rate in Oregon was 9.5%, the present 8.9% rate is still much improved. Nevada, already with one of the highest rates in the nation, had it's unemployment rates go up by 0.1% to 12.1%. Wyoming's rate also increased by 0.1% in August to 5.7%. Yet, some states in the region did see lower rate in August. Both the States of California (down 0.1% to 10.6%) and Idaho (down 0.1% to 7.4%) were lower in August.

Although the Oregon's unemployment rate was up, many of the state's major business sectors saw improvement in August.
