The Scope Of Sacramento Recycling

By Jeannie Chapman

Recycling is not a new activity for the citizens of Sacramento. Community involvement is a major component of all Sacramento recycling projects. Cooperation between the population and the city contributes to the tons of items that are collected each week that can be recycled. There are curb side pickup schedules that alternate between green waste and other items. All residents in the county are supplied with containers designed for collection of recyclables.

Citizens are not tied to the once weekly service given by the county. They can call and arrange for a special collection of larger items and it will be picked up at curb side by appointment. This service is designed to help residents dispose of old furniture, discarded doors or wooden items and tree branches. They will not take items that fall into the hazardous waste category or electrical appliances. These items must be delivered to specific locations for proper disposal.

There are commercial enterprises that pick up items not covered by the county. Some will pay for the items and one program works with social groups and neighborhoods to assist with fund raisers. These companies pay their employees to sort through the items and place them in separate locations and later deliver them to centers that will recycle them and pay the highest price for them.

Even old furniture can be recycled into usable items. Many companies use the fabrics and stuffing to create new fabrics. The wood can be pulped and then molded into new shapes for future use by manufacturers. There are several local companies that will collect cast off items and they do not restrict what they will take. The pickup usually comes with a price tag but the consumer can count on saving time and money when using these vendors.

Most families in the area do their own recycling when it comes to aluminum cans and plastic water bottles. These items are easily stored and transported to the neighborhood collection site. They are purchased by the pound so each station has a scale for weighing. This is one of the most popular methods of fund raising for schools and churches.

E-waste is by far one of the most dangerous items designated as hazardous. The elements used in these items are poisonous to people, pets and the earth. You will find that this is the fastest growing base of technology anywhere. New devices arrive daily and people do not know what to do with the old models. New companies are also springing up to solve this problem.

Computers, TVs, and all of the other hand held devices contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment. The last thing we want is to pollute the soil, water and air by carelessly throwing them away. E-waste companies collect these elements before they destroy the item and sell them back to the industries that can use them again.

In an effort to improve the environment Sacramento recycling has put into place several programs that involve the public as well as the city and county. While cooperation between citizens and government does not always work the exceptions to that rule always surprise and delight on lookers. In this case the result is a better environment and a smaller foot print for Sacramento.
