Demands To Adhere To During Conversion To Judaism Way Of Life

By Rabbi Celso Cukierkorn

Conversion to Judaism is a conscious decision that requires commitment and resolve. There are traditions, customs and beliefs to be followed by members of this religion. This requires the converters to go through classes in order to gain full understanding. The effect will be felt in all areas of ones life. You will be required to teach these things to your children when they are old enough.

This knowledge can be gotten from speaking with other Jews in your community. You must explain the decision to loved ones and family to ensure that they are comfortable. They need to clearly understand your drive, passion and desire to convert. They will also demand an answer on why you have left the religion you were following.

It is also important to have a word with your partner in marriage if this is the reason you are converting. This will prevent a scenario where someone has to tell you that Im a rabbi, but will not take you through conversion if it is just for marriage purposes. The decision must be personal and genuine. It is not just a public decision.

The decision made about conversion to Judaism should be communicated to the rabbi. He has the power and responsibility to initiate the process. You will be confronted with questions on why you have made that decision. The intention is to see how informed you are about the step you are about to make.

It is mandatory for you to attend classes . This is where the learner is taken through the traditions, beliefs and customs of the Jews. The classes are normally delivered in Hebrew. You will sit for a test when learning sessions end in a court referred to as Beit Din. They seek to examine how well you understand Judaism.

Trainees who qualify will be taken through the immersion ceremony at Mikveh, completing conversion to Judaism. Males who have not undergone circumcision must complete this ritual. It demands that a little blood be shed for the ceremony to be complete. It is a mandatory requirement for all males seeking to convert.

Children born before a mother converted will not get direct acceptance into the religion. This is the case to those who have conceived before conversion. It is a strict rule that is followed by Orthodox and higher orders among the Jews. An opportunity is offered for them to go through classes in future and convert if they wish.

The implication is that a mother does not pass the religion automatically to his children. Classes for children begin at the age of thirteen and this is the opportunity to convert. It is a way of ensuring that the young converts understand what they are signing up for.

It takes understanding and knowledge to complete conversion to Judaism. Clarity of desire, reasons and intention is demanded. You must make a personal decision. You will be under the guidance of a competent rabbi to take you through the motions. There are various stages, each of which makes you a better Jew. The effect of conversion will be seen in your entire life.
