How fantastic product managers succeed

By Sophia Gerritsen

A while ago, I switched my career from engineering to product management. To plan for a job interview, I checked out our product management team and discovered that effective product managers have some habits in common. To aid you in your career, I 'd love to share my findings with you.

Focus on your business case: Your executive management has financial expectations from your product. These expectations are the underpinnings for revenue growth targets or at the minimum cost management. Make certain you regularly update your business case. If the business case can not satisfy the expectations of management, you have three options:. a) re-focus the product, b) adjust the expectations, c) kill the product.

Act like an authority: A product manager is a leader in product development. You set the goals for what the product is. You put in priority the requirements. It is without a doubt a vital role, it steers what employees will work on. Be sure you show authority in your decisions. Make sure you can thoroughly substantiate your decisions. Understand how to convey the decision to your various teams. Technologists usually like to get taken through the substantiation first and than be presented with a decision. If they feel they need to, executives want to hear the executive summary first and dive deeper.

Be action oriented: People are overloaded, with various competing duties competing for their attention. Projects that are not top of mind will be put on the lower priorities. To guarantee that the tasks carrying your product always keep progressing, plan frequent (weekly, bi-weekly or monthly) sessions to check on progression. Make sure that the status is reviewed in the meeting and all actions resulting from the meeting are thoroughly documented in the meeting, correctly circulated after the meeting and followed up on in the next meeting. Recorded actions include 3 main elements: 1) what is the action 2) who is responsible for the action 3) when is it due.

Conclusion: The job of a product manager can at times be demanding, but seeing your product proceeding from a concept to a thing that other people really make use of is extremely enjoyable. With this article, I have striven to give you a few of the tools that can help you succeed in a career in product management.
