Street Lighting In Rural And Urban Areas

By Essie Osborn

These are lamps that are placed on a raised post and are meant to be sources of light on the road edges or walking paths. They are normally lit at some given time of the night. To make it easy and save on cost each street lights are fitted with sensitive photocells that can control the lighting up at dusk and off at dawn. Street lighting helps save accidents on roads and reduce crime.

The provision of light is not only meant for night times but can be also be done when there is some weather which makes it appear dark. The bulbs are usually fitted on some poles that are meant specifically for them or may also be put on any utility pole

Information from research carried out by people from drivers, pedestrians and bikers has it that when there is enough light in the street crime reduces in a great way. It is based on the fact that when the roads are clear for one to see it reduces fear for crime doers are afraid of being seen in much light.

This though should be done with concern to which type of lights to put on the roads. Some lamps are so bright that instead of making one feel safe it makes one not to see properly. That excess glare would make one fear all the more. Road lamps should be of uniform light that is able to eliminate shadows that are dark and glare to make an individual feel secure.

These lamps may cost a lot to fix and make sure they are maintained in good condition. Although it is not easy to really estimate or know which types of crimes are prevented by lighting or even put a cost on the benefits of the fear cut down, these lamps still remains essential not only to the victims but other people too.

Apart from wrongdoings, these lamps help improve the development of a city by that when there is light in most places then people would work for long hours and this brings about development. Lights play great role in changing an economy to a 24 hour economy. Another benefit associated with enough illumination on the roads and highways is that it reduces accidents at the same time ensures drivers and pedestrians are safe.

Research has it that enough light in urban areas cuts down the accidents by more than sixty percent. This is true since most accidents are experienced at night which implies that the darkness has something to do with these injuries. This is with consideration that some of the drivers may be irresponsible at night because in many cases there are no cops. It is still believed that as much as they may over speed and do other not allowed behaviors, presence of light reduces accidents.

In conclusion the fact is that enough illumination has the ability to keep the public safe, improve the economic status of a city and so it should be improved. Nevertheless, it has some environmental negative implications but they are less important to the main reason of lighting.
